Good morning, friends.
I recently heard a song by Micah Tyler called Soul Song. There is a line it in that has totally gripped my heart. It goes like this:
“When my faith is a whisper and the pain is a shout.”
Can you relate to that phrase? There is so much meaning and truth in just those twelve little words! The song, to me, is a commentary on the power of music in our lives. God has used music to comfort and heal my broken and wounded heart more times than I can say! I am guessing many of you would have the same testimony. It is not a new concept.
In 1 Samuel 16, we read the story of King Saul who was in emotional and mental turmoil. His servants recommended he hire a musician to come and play for him to calm his disquieted spirit. They found David and brought him to the King. The passage concludes with these words:
“Whenever the spirit came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better and the evil spirit would leave him.”
Music has power to heal wounded hearts and troubled souls. When our faith is a whisper and the pain is a shout, oh how we need a soul song! Later in the song, these lyrics resonated with my heart:
“I need, the truth like a symphony,
surrounding me and telling me,
You won’t ever leave me alone.I need Your love playing up on me,
on repeat till I can see,
You will always be the only one,
singing me home. You, Jesus, are my soul song.”
Isn’t that such a comforting thought?
There are so many times in our lives that our faith becomes just a whisper and the pain is screaming! But the good news is that our God is in the whisper! It brought to mind the story of Elijah as found in I Kings 19. Elijah was not in a good place emotionally or mentally. He was literally running for his life. But God appeared to Him, not in the powerful wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in the gentle whisper. God is present in our whispers of faith!
He hears our cries, just as He heard the father in Mark 9 who came to Jesus to ask for healing for his son. Jesus said to him, “Everything is possible for him who believes.” To that, the father immediately exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” And Jesus healed his son!
Jesus spoke these words to His disciples in Matthew 17:20: “I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed…nothing will be impossible for you.” God, who is the author of our faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), knows our hearts. He sees our mustard seed faith and hears our whispered cries when the pain is shouting. He is there! So, today, my friend, if your faith is a whisper and your pain is a shout, look to Christ! Let the truth of His Word surround you like a symphony. He is your soul song and He is singing you home!
