Good morning, church family. We missed those of you who could not be with us Sunday for worship. Stuart delivered yet another great message from his series on the Apostles’ Creed. His focus this week was on the line “Suffered… descended into hell.” Christ’s sufferings included the fact that He lived His life under the shadow of the cross. He knew He would die a horrible death. He anticipated it all of His life. And yet He still went to the cross for His people. He suffered in His life before the cross. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, leading up to the cross. And His suffering reached the ultimate on the cross. Stuart went on to say that there are 5 key words to define what Jesus did on the cross:
1.) Propitiation (I John 4:10): He took the wrath of God for you.
2.) Reconciliation (Romans 5:10): God was at enmity with us. But Christ reconciled us to God. He took the enmity away.
3.) Ransom (Matthew 20:28): Jesus paid the price to ransom us, to set us free.
4.) Substitution (2 Corinthians 5:21): He was our substitute. Our guilt was put on Christ. His righteousness was put on us. This is the amazing exchange.
5.) Redemption (Galatians 3:13:) He went down to the slave market of sin and bought us back.
Stuart’s closing question to us was this: Who do you belong to? If you are in Christ, you are not your own. You have been bought with a price.
Great thoughts for us to meditate on until we meet again!
